I basically reacquired a skill that I have had before, but have long placed into silence, the art of storyboarding.
To set this up, I brainstormed what goes into a storyboard, which is a short story or treatment of some sort. After researching online, I decided to have my art class make a 12 panel storyboard of one scene.
I also had to relearn how to draw character sheets, Which I will provide a resource for the following week as well.
the images of the storyboards I will post in here when I get ahold of a scanner ( which I do not have ). So on Monday,

Below is a link that I used for my storyboarding lesson
I think the author has some valid points in this article. We need to start thinking more about what skills the students are bringing into the classroom, one being technlogy.
Education reform should include strengthening technology in the classroom. One idea I have is to install Ubuntu into public school computers. I have heard some school districts in San Diego and other parts of So. Cal use it. There are many advantages of Ubuntu ( the friendly user face of Linux ). This is one tool the author did not mention!
Also what the author did not mention is what steps an instructor should take to be on the same page as the digital natives.
How to go about funding? In this reform, would it be decided on a state basis, or done by the board of education? Some thoughts, but the article is pretty good, dry at times.
Week 2
Competency
I wanted the students to learn how to frame their storyboards differently, as well as the camera angles, etc.

Here is an excellent video on youtube that demonstrates film making techniques.
I think this article is useful for not only art educators, but teachers in general. We are in the Web 2.0 culture and now the more and more advanced that our society is getting,
Web 3.0 isn't too far off. I like the fact that the author also pointed out all the free resource tools such as Blogger, Gimp, Etc. and his point is to use technology to our advantage.
The author didn't fail to realize that certain socio-economic classes do not have access to technology, and that for the most part, it leaves behind
that sector of the population. It's the teacher's job then, and the parents to find other ways that their students can access that Web 2.0 Technology, if it's not available to them at home.
Overall this article is a great start, and should be taken seriously, including in where we have a deficit that surely is severe worse then our financial one.
It's up to us.
Week 3
Competency
This week I taught a lesson on film editing, and what are some things to consider when approaching it. I gave the class 2 pieces of footage,
which I got off youtube from the film " Le Samurai ". They were to re-edit the film using continuity techniques such as match-cuts, and also incorporating transitions such as dissolves and fade outs. I will try to upload the mov demo which I did here.. if possible, soon.
Resources
Here is the software I used to rip footage off of youtube. You can also convert youtube videos into MP3s, and more.
Education games can be a resource, ok, I see the point that the author makes, but which students play them, really?
I grew up with Number Munchers, also Classic Concentration, and Jeopardy, all for NES. Here's a quote from the article that tells a whole lot without saying too much, " Digital gaming is a $10 billion per year industry ". That alone should be enough proof, that because it's an industry, it seeks, " profits " and education is not profitable. Yes, there are some skills that can be achieved playing some games, but I feel that those same critical thinking areas can be strengthened more in art, and other subjects. No one ever questions, why is this happening in the videogame?? Why am I attacking this person? Would it be legal in real life to do this? etc..
For the most part, videogames, including the digital kind, really hypnotize the user, almost robotic like.
Skills can be picked up, and so can a trained parrot pick up speech drivin into it, like say there's a bad mouth Jersey Woman that owns a Parrot. The parrot will pick up on her language, without almost thinking.
Those are issues we are to watch out for, as I think the author left out those elements.
I could go on, and on here, but there are other forums for such things, I think I'll let the point end here.
Week 4
Competency
This week I am teaching students how to draw the human face. ( So the goal at the end of the project is to draw the human figure ).
I broke up the lesson by having the students draw first the eyes, then nose, then ears, then mouth
( I provided a handout for this, which I will attach to this lesson ).
The Third Resource I have here is a handout which I made that broke down the steps to draw the features of the face.
READING : A Systyem Based Approach To Technology
The Approach that the offer gives is a good one, as far as a step by step process. The community of practice is critical in order to fulfill the remaining steps. If there is no support let's say at
a students home, how much time will they have to make up for their community of practice? Are there friends, and other members of the community using this technology into practice? They can help
bring about the motivation and necessary drive for success. If they are not, the teacher must backtrack and find alternative ways for that step to be reached. Library hours, lunchtime technology work, even
possibly renting out a laptop to the student. I think the article is a good road map for new teachers trying to weigh in on where to take their course in intergrating technology.
